Akshay Navami is a sacred day symbolising imperishable merit – Akshay Punya. On this auspicious occasion, let us reflect on a profound teaching of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, who revealed the essence of true devotion through the simple yet deeply philosophical line:

“Man Karu Sumiran Radhe Rani Ke Charan”
(O mind, engage in the remembrance of Radha Rani’s lotus feet.)

A philosopher speaks to his mind, saying, “O mind, meditate on the lotus feet of Radha Rani.” Why does he speak to the mind? Why meditate on Radha Rani, and why specifically on Her lotus feet? All these questions are answered within this single line.

He speaks to the mind because the mind is the source of both planning and action. Whatever we do, we first think about it with our mind. The senses themselves are powerless; they only follow the commands of the mind. Even in dreams, when the senses are inactive, the mind continues to see, hear, taste, run, and act. This proves that the mind alone performs every function, while the senses merely assist. Thus, the mind is the cause of both bondage and liberation.

Scriptures from the Vedas to the Ramayana affirm this truth. God Himself notes not the physical deeds but the thoughts and intentions of the mind. Sin (paap) and virtue (punya) arise from the inner state of the mind. The world rewards physical acts, but God rewards the inner actions of the mind. Arjuna, though appearing to fight a war, was untouched by sin because his mind was completely absorbed in Krishna. Hence, God said, “Arjuna never killed; his mind was always with Me.”

Everywhere in the world, actions are judged by intent. When soldiers kill in war under their king’s command, they are not condemned because their act carries no personal enmity. Similarly, in the spiritual realm, what God considers is the intention behind every act.

Therefore, if one does not chant the name of God even once outwardly but keeps the mind in continuous remembrance, that person will attain God-realisation. On the other hand, one may chant God’s name a thousand times without the involvement of the mind, yet it yields nothing – like multiplying anything by zero.

The mind’s attachment determines the soul’s fate. If the mind clings to the material world, the soul will be bound to it even after death. This truth was seen even in the case of Jada Bharat, an enlightened saint who became attached to a young deer and, at death, remembered it, thus taking birth as a deer.

Hence, the philosopher instructs his mind: your true work is sumiran – remembrance. The mind alone determines whether one ascends to the divine realm or descends into illusion. There is no enemy like the mind, and no friend like the mind. If it seeks happiness in the world, it becomes an enemy; if it seeks happiness in God, it becomes a true friend.

If actions are performed by the senses without the full involvement of the mind, God does not take note of them. Actions done half-heartedly hold no spiritual weight. Love is the only true medium to reach God. Love – pure, selfless, and divine is the essence of everything.

Everyone knows how to love. Even animals and birds know how to love. And, above all, we all love ourselves, don’t we? Yes, we love ourselves, we love our atma (soul). Every moment, whatever we do, we do it for our own happiness, for the satisfaction of our soul. No one has ever found true happiness in the world of Maya (illusion).

A person will continue to strive and make efforts until he finds happiness. The reason is simple: we are inherently part of happiness, and that is why the soul is always in search of it. Seeking happiness is a natural, fundamental aspect of our existence. Whether we are a tiny insect (patanga) or the creator of the universe (Brahma), we all have one thing in common; we seek anand (bliss).

For the sake of happiness, some foolish people seek pleasure in the material world, while others, the wise ones, seek anand in God. This is the essential difference – it’s all about where one directs their search for happiness.

Real bhakti (devotion) is the sumiran of God through love. Outward acts like kirtan and rituals are merely helpers. Actions performed without heartfelt involvement hold no spiritual value.

Why, then, meditate on Radha Rani’s feet and not Her face? Because unlike the material body, every part of Her divine form is Chidanand-mayi – composed of pure consciousness and bliss. Just as every piece of sugar tastes the same, every part of Radha Rani’s being is filled with infinite joy.

Meditating on the lotus feet of Radha Rani, the Supreme Power, brings Her Grace, through which Maya departs. Even the mightiest sages like Vishwamitra could not overcome Maya without divine grace. Only by surrendering to Radha Rani’s lotus feet can one cross the ocean of illusion and attain eternal bliss.

This is the essence of the instruction –
“Man Karu Sumiran Radhe Rani Ke Charan.”
