Hanuman Ji: The Embodiment of True Devotion and Humility

(Lecture by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj on Hanuman Jayanti)

Hanuman Ji The Embodiment of True Devotion and Humility by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat (2)

(This incident relates to a time when Garud, Sudarshan Chakra, and Satyabhama had developed subtle pride in their own greatness. The Lord, wishing to remove their ego and reveal true devotion, decided to show them the mirror through His dearest devotee, Hanuman Ji)

I am going to narrate a historical story about Hanuman Ji. Hanuman Ji was present during Lord Ram’s descension; you all know this very well. After spending 11,000 years on earth, when Shri Ram returned to Saket Lok, His divine abode, He said to Hanuman Ji, “You should continue preaching devotion to Me. Do not come to My abode now. When I return again, I will instruct you further.”

Hanuman Ji obeyed Shri Ram’s command. From Treta Yug, which spans 1,296,000 years, until the end of Dwapar Yug, which lasts 864,000 years, he remained in Bharat (India), continuing his service.

During His descension, Shri Krishna resided in Dwarka. One day, a discussion arose among a few of His devotees regarding their own strength. Garud, the divine eagle, began speaking boastfully, saying, “I can do this and that. There is nothing I cannot do.” The Sudarshan Chakra, the Lord’s divine disc, also proudly asserted its own immense power. In this way, they continued speaking among themselves, each expressing their greatness.

Shri Krishna, being omniscient, became aware of this. He thought, “They seem to have developed ego. They need to be corrected.” So He called Garud and said, “Hanuman Ji lives on that mountain. Bring him here; I have some urgent work.” Garud replied, “Maharaj, I will go immediately and return at once.”

Garud went and saw that Hanuman Ji had grown old and was lying down, resting. He addressed Him rudely, “Hey monkey, you are blocking the path with your tail. Does Hanuman Ji live here?” Hanuman Ji replied, “Brother, I am Hanuman Ji. I have become old. Why are you insulting me?” Garud said, “Oh, so you are Hanuman Ji. I am sorry. Listen, my Lord Shri Krishna is calling you.”

Hanuman Ji asked, “Who?” Garud replied, “Bhagwan Shri Krishna.” Hanuman Ji, wishing to play a little joke, said, “I do not go anywhere unless Shri Ram calls me. Go and tell Him that I am a devotee and servant of Shri Ram. Why should I go when someone else calls me? You can see that I have grown old.” Garud said, “Do you know what you are saying and to whom?” Hanuman Ji replied, “Yes, I know. Go back and convey my message.”

Garud returned to Dwarka in a moment and said to Shri Krishna, “Maharaj, he was showing so much pride. Why were You praising him?” Shri Krishna said, “You should not speak like that. Go and tell him that Ram is calling him.” Garud asked, “Should I say so?” Shri Krishna replied, “Yes, say that Shri Ram has called you. By mistake, I said it was Shri Krishna.”

Garud returned and told Hanuman Ji, “I made a mistake earlier. Actually, Shri Ram has called you.” Hanuman Ji nodded and said, “If that is so, then go. I am coming shortly.” Garud said, “There is no need to delay. Sit on my back and I will take you there in a moment.” Hanuman Ji replied, “Stop blabbering. You go ahead. I am coming. Just inform them that I am on the way.”

Garud insisted, “Shri Ram will be displeased.” Hanuman Ji said, “I am telling you to go.” Garud said, “I will not leave without you. If you do not come willingly, I will pick you up and take you.” Hanuman Ji said, “Oh, you will pick me up?” He then grew His tail, wrapped Garud in it, and threw him into the sea.

Hanuman Ji then reached Dwarka in a moment.

At the entrance, the Sudarshan Chakra was, as always, guarding the gate of Dwarka. It stopped Hanuman Ji and said, “Hey monkey, where are you going?” The Chakra is supremely powerful – there is nothing it cannot cut, whether it be a thunderbolt or anything else.

Hanuman Ji replied, “Brother, Shri Krishna has called me.” The Chakra asked, “Who are you?” Hanuman Ji said, “Come here, I will tell you.” As it came closer, he placed the Chakra in his mouth, then leapt over the gate and entered the palace.

Inside, Shri Krishna was seated with Satyabhama, one of his principal queens, who was very proud of her beauty. Shri Krishna said to her, “Hanuman Ji is coming. I will assume the form of Ram.” He removed His peacock feather and took up a bow. He instructed Satyabhama, “You quickly come and sit as Sita.” She asked what she should wear and how Sita behaved, and Shri Krishna explained everything. Satyabhama then sat to His left.

Hanuman Ji arrived, bowed down with great love, and said, “Prabhu, why have You called me?” Shri Krishna replied, “I called you without any particular reason; I wished to see you.” Hanuman Ji then asked, “Prabhu, may I ask a question? Who is this maidservant seated next to You?”

Satyabhama felt deeply embarrassed and thought, “Do I look like a maidservant to him?” He is just a monkey. Shri Krishna said, “She is your mother, Sita Ji.” Hanuman Ji became silent.

Shri Krishna then asked, “What is in your mouth?” Hanuman Ji replied, “Nothing, Maharaj. A toy at the gate was troubling me, so I put it in my mouth.” He then took out the Sudarshan Chakra.

Shri Krishna asked, “Where is Garud?” Hanuman Ji replied, “Maharaj, I told him to go ahead. He insisted that I accompany him, so I threw him away. He must be on his way back.”

Just then, Garud also arrived and said, “This monkey reached here before me!”

Thus, through Hanuman Ji, the Lord gently removed their pride and revealed the true greatness of devotion.

All glory to Pawanputra Hanuman.
