Shri Radha Rani – Our Eternal Mother

(Speech by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj on Mother’s Day)

Shri Radha Rani - Our Eternal Mother by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat
Mother's Day

Look, there’s a small word – “only” (‘hi’). But what a miraculous word it is. From countless lifetimes, we have tried to establish a relationship with God – not just today; we’ve been chanting “Radhe Radhe” for lifetimes. But even in all those lives gone by, we never truly affirmed, “Only Shri Radha or Shri Krishna are mine.” We didn’t add “only” (‘hi’), we added “also” (‘bhi”).

We said: “God is also mine, and so is my wife, husband, mother, father, son, daughter, grandson, grand daughter – they are also mine.” We tried to keep both, and then blamed God saying, “Why does God demand that we give up all to attain Him only?”

God says, if you say ‘only’  (“hi”), then I will bestow grace. But you love the world also, and you love Me also. That’s not the kind of love I want.

Just like in our selfish world – a wife doesn’t want her husband to love another woman. No woman would accept that her husband loves her also and someone else also. So why are you surprised if I, God, ask the same of you? Why do I say, “Love only Me”? Because the declaration, “You alone are my mother and father,” uses the word “eva”, which means “only”.

“You alone are my mother” – not the one sitting at home, because she’ll change. If she dies today, someone else will become your mother. And then another. We’ve had infinite mothers in infinite wombs – a dog has been our mother, a cat, a donkey – all in these 8.4 million life forms we’ve traversed for lifetimes. A human birth is rare indeed.

In our worldly life, we hold our father in our heart, mother too, sister, wife – no one says, “Why do you love your mother?” or “Why do you love your daughter?” Love everyone – the worldly heart is vast. But you, Oh God – what kind of heart is that which says, “Love only me”?

“Mamekam sharanam vraja” – that’s the essence of the entire Gita.
Arjun was taking refuge in dharma and in Krishna.  So God spoke18 chapters just to say:
“Abandon all dharmas and surrender to Me only.”

This is the tug-of-war between us and God –
He says, “Say only (“hi”),”
We say, “No, we’ll say ‘also’  (“bhi”).
So He says, “Then suffer, be punished.”
We say, “Fine, we’ll keep suffering.”

We’ve gotten used to it – just like thugs in cities get beaten up all day. Someone throws a slipper, someone hurls abuse – and still they laugh about it. In the evening, they gather and chat:

“Today I teased a girl, she flung her slipper at me. It missed, but wow! What a throw!”
Another says,  “How was your day?” “I snatched a gold chain – looked heavy. I was thrilled. But when I took it to the jeweler, he said it’s fake!  Oh no!  Even these rich women wear fake jewelry nowadays? She had a car – and still she wore a fake?”

They find joy in such nonsense.

Once, King Parikshit asked his Guru, Sukhdev Paramhans:
“Why do worldly people keep suffering for lifetimes and yet don’t surrender to God?”

One day, whilst wandering in a forest, they saw dried human faeces, and around it, a few worms were circling, making balls out of it. Guruji said, “Look how much they’re suffering. Pick one up with a stick and place it gently on the flower I brought.”

Parikshit Ji  obeyed – he picked one with a stick and placed it on the flower. The worm quickly crawled back to the faeces.

“Guruji, what is this?”

“Remember. you asked me earlier why people endure suffering for lifetimes and don’t surrender? They are used to it. They’ve adjusted. The poor sleep in the cold, wake up in heatwaves, and still go to work – else how will they eat? Only the poor truly understand suffering.”

A poor person comes and sits next to you and you inwardly complain, “what a stink is emanating from his body.” Even the one sitting in filth has God within him.
You say, “Yes, God may reside in them but …”   Just see how much pride we have!

We think: “Now I have a beautiful home, mother, father, wife, son, husband – everything by God’s grace.”  But even in  our so-called happy household, someone is always angry –
Today father is upset, tomorrow mother is grumpy, wife’s mood is off, son’s temper is flaring.

You married, thinking it would bring supreme bliss? This is the so-called bliss – now keep enduring it till death. You say, “My wife is terrible, but I’m good.” Oh please – it’s just a competition. She says, “Why did you leave this item here? It will rot.” “What should I do? Keep it on my head?” These are the fights in every household – not just among the poor. I’ve lived with royal families too – it’s the same.

So Thakurji (God) says:

“Love your worldly family, serve them. That’s fine – it will bring Me joy. But remember, they’re bound by maya. If you bring them into your heart, your inner being will become impure. And the very purpose is to purify that heart.”

“Love Me instead. Love My saints. Love the gopis and gopas. Love all My infinite forms and incarnations. Love them – they’re truly Mine.
However,  if you love your mayic family, all your accumulated merits will be lost.”

That’s why I say – add “only” (“hi”), remove “also” (“bhi”).

And the truth is, worldly people don’t want your love – They want results. Solve their problems and they’re happy. They want their needs met – not your affection. Give love alone and withhold their wants and needs – no one will appreciate that. They’ll throw you out.

But God says: “I want only love. I don’t need anything else. Just give Me your heart.”

And give your body to the world. They want your service – fulfill your duties to mother, father, wife, husband – but do it gracefully, without resentment.

By the way, don’t listen to Kripaluji’s lecture and start a war at home by saying: “You all are selfish and fake – I won’t love anyone now!” No! Instead say lovingly: “Mummy, I love you so much, I live for your happiness.” Say the same to your wife. Serve everyone joyfully.

And quietly, in your heart, love God and only his devotees. Give your body to the world, but your mind to God.

This is what the Vedas teach. No Pandit or scholar can challenge that something else is written in our scriptures. I have specially even made a doha (couplet) on this:

“Man Hari mein, tan jagat mein – karma yog yehi jaan.”
(Give your mind to Hari, your body to the world – this is true karma yoga.)

The reverse is:
“Tan Hari mein, man jagat mein – yeh mahaan agyaan.”
(Give your body to Hari but your mind to the world – this is great ignorance.)

So you will have to love God and say “only” – today or after thousands of lifetimes. The choice is yours.
