The Habit to Hide and Lie

The Habit to Hide and Lie

(Excerpts of Shri Maharaj Ji’s Speeches)

Whatever seva you do in whatever form, be sure to develop the feeling that you are performing this work only for Shyamsundara’s happiness. Genuine emotions and feelings must be imbued in any work or seva that you perform. By performing your devotional practice in a similar manner, along with utilising each and every moment that you are here, you are bound to derive tremendous spiritual benefit.

Your motive for doing this should not be fear of your Guru, that he may catch you doing something wrong. No! Please note this point carefully. There is a fault that lies within each and every one of you, in connection with this, that will remain with you until God-realisation; even until you actually meet Shri Krishna in His Divine form. And what is this fault? It is your tendency to hide things from your Guru; to hide things from your Maharaj Ji. You do this in a number of ways.

Sometimes, you embellish the truth a little more by adding something of your own to it, or you conceal part of the truth about an incident to shield yourself from the blame. Either way, you do one of these things. By doing so, you commit namaparadha, an unpardonable spiritual offence or transgression. This is a very serious sin indeed and a grave matter demanding serious reflection on your part, as your spiritual progress is hampered.

Let’s say two people are talking with each other and suddenly one says, “Oh! Maharaj Ji is coming! Let’s go, quick!” How did you even think that Maharaj Ji had only just come? How did you conclude that until that moment, God and Maharaj Ji were not present and only now he has come? If you think along these lines, then you are bound to commit sins even if you continue your devotional practice for countless ages. If you feel for a single moment that Shri Krishna is not with you or your Guru is not with you at all times, then you are bound to commit nothing but mistakes. There is no way you can save yourself from this. Any analysis to the contrary is simply wrong; such thinking is weak. The moment you lose the realisation of the presence of God and Guru, you have also lost any inkling of surrender that you may have had.

Now I do acknowledge that this habit of keeping privacy and telling lies has been with you since countless lifetimes. Nevertheless, it is in this human life or in some human life thereafter, that you will have to shed this habit, and it is better to do it now than to never do it. If you continue with this habit while you are here in the ashram in my presence, then you will not be able to surrender even in the least. Today, you are hiding one thing from your Guru, and tomorrow you will hide two things. The day after that, it will be three things and one day it will become natural to do so. When that happens, your behaviour with your Guru will be exactly the same as your interactions in the world. Within your heart, you may think, “Maharaj Ji doesn’t know about this,” and when I ask you about it, you say, “O Maharaj Ji, you are omniscient, you know everything.” So you lie and at the same time proclaim that Maharaj Ji knows everything. Do you realise the gravity of the sin you have just committed?

Sins are classified in different categories and you just committed the gravest one of all, namapradha. Thus be very careful all the time. Work diligently to develop the feeling that God and Guru are always with you, and that you are never alone. He notes every one of your ideas, never missing a single moment of your thoughts, words or deeds. Though this process of recording is performed by the Supreme Lord Himself, the Saint who has realised Him is no less than Him, as both are one and the same.
