Who is More Important – Sita or Ram?

Who is More Important - Sita or Ram? by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat

The scriptures declare:

“श्री रामो जगतां पिता, जगन्माता तु जानकी”

This means that Shri Ram is the father of the entire universe, and Sita (Janaki) is the mother of the whole world.

Just as in worldly life we have both a father and a mother, similarly, we can accept Sita-Ram as our divine parents. In their earthly pastimes too, they appeared as husband and wife, upholding the ideals of family life. Yet, the deeper philosophical truth is that they are not two separate entities – they are one divine reality manifest in two forms.

However, if we momentarily consider them as two for the sake of understanding, a natural question arises: Who is more important?

The scriptures themselves provide guidance. They say:

“पितुः शतगुणा माता”
(pituḥ śataguṇā mātā)

– The mother is a hundred times greater than the father.

Even great spiritual masters have upheld this truth. Adi Shankaracharya, a strict sanyasi who followed the Vedic path of renunciation – where one bows only to God and Guru – still declared that a sanyasi must bow to his mother. This was not merely theoretical. In practice, he himself sought his mother’s permission before accepting sanyas. The same principle is seen in the life of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Thus, even on the path of renunciation, where detachment from the world is emphasised, the mother holds a uniquely exalted position.

From this perspective, the mother is given greater importance. Therefore, when reflecting on Sita-Ram, the position of Mother Sita can be understood as supremely compassionate and especially elevated.

On the auspicious occasion of Sita Navami, this truth reminds us to seek the grace of Janaki Mata, whose motherly love is boundless. Through her compassion, we are naturally led to the shelter of Shri Ram.
