Akshaya Tritiya: Its True Significance
From a discourse by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj

Akshaya Tritiya is a festival pertaining to Lord Krishna. The significance of all such days connected with Him is this: by surrendering ourselves – physically, financially, and mentally to the Lord, we derive spiritual benefit. Of course, there are many stories associated with this day, describing incidents that took place on this occasion, but their purpose is to guide us toward devotion.
You all know the meaning of the word “Akshaya” – that which is unlimited or inexhaustible. The charity given on this day yields unlimited fruit. This is the true meaning of Akshaya Tritiya. Traditionally, gold has been given to charity on this day. However, today people are doing just the opposite. Instead of donating gold, they are purchasing it for themselves, misinterpreting the significance of the day. You will see that the price of gold rises sharply, as the wealthy rush to buy it. Even those who are not so wealthy feel compelled to purchase gold, believing that by doing so they will invite Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, into their homes.
Those who are wealthy should donate gold on this day. Others should give according to their capacity. This is the main significance of Akshaya Tritiya.
Along with this, one should engage the body and mind in the service of God. This is meant for everyone, whether rich or poor. After all, we possess only three things: body, mind, and wealth. Through these alone can we serve and worship God.
Shri Maharaj Ji also remarked, with gentle humor, that he too makes offerings on this day. One should not assume that, being a Jagadguru and a Brahmin, he only receives from others. On the contrary, he shared that he feeds young Brahmin girls and gives in charity, underscoring that everyone must strive for their own spiritual upliftment. Though said in a light, tongue-in-cheek manner, it carried a profound message – no one is exempt from the law of giving.
People often interpret holy festivals in a purely worldly manner. Yet, the true purpose of these sacred days is to remind us of God in every possible way. In our country, every step is regarded as a place of pilgrimage, and every day is considered sacred. This tradition has been thoughtfully designed to encourage householders to practise devotion amidst their daily lives, so that they may at least secure another human birth – a rare and precious opportunity. Otherwise, even this privilege may be lost.
Therefore, charity is the main significance of this holy day, and along with it, service to God through body and mind is essential.
Thus, every holy day reminds us to serve God, and Akshaya Tritiya is one such day.
