What can the world really give us?

Part 7 of Bhakti Upliftment Series

(Excerpt of a speech delivered by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj)

If you churn milk, butter will come out. But if you churn lime water, nothing will come out of it. In the same way, if you love God or a God-realized Saint, you will receive what they possess, because they have that Divine wealth. But if you place your love in the world, what will you get from it? Even if worldly people sincerely wish to fulfil your desires, how can they do so? They simply do not possess what you are seeking.

A wealthy person has wealth. A strong person has strength. Whatever a person possesses, only that can he give to someone else.

Bliss, peace, happiness, and Divine love are spiritual treasures. The world does not possess them at all. So what can the world give you? The person who thinks, ‘My son will give me happiness,’ or ‘My wife will give me happiness,’ is a fool. What happiness can they give? Poor thing, what can she give? She herself is a beggar. If she does not possess Divine happiness, how can she give it to you?

It is like one blind man holding the hand of another blind man. The first blind man decides to make a fool of the other and confidently says, ‘Come, hold on to me. I have eyes.’ The amusing thing is that he knows the person holding his hand is blind, and he also knows that he himself is blind – but the other person does not realize this. Thus, both end up deceiving one another.

The person who understands this fact awakens.

People love someone because of self-interest. There is always some self-interest behind worldly love. But that self-interest should be directed towards God. It should take you to God and to the God-realized Saint.

Instead, people pray, ‘May I get a son. May I acquire wealth. May I obtain a high position. May I gain status.’ This kind of self-interest is completely misguided. Such a person may eventually become an atheist when those desires are not fulfilled.

And in any case, neither a Saint nor God can help you in such matters beyond your prarabdha. Those things come according to destiny.

Look at Bhagwan Ram Himself. When the time came for Dasharath Ji to die, he had to die. One might say, ‘But he was Your father!’ So what? When the appointed time arrives, one must leave the world. Bhagwan does not cancel the law of destiny simply because someone is His father.

Therefore, do not go to God and Guru asking for worldly things. Go to them for that which only they can give – Divine love, Divine bliss, peace, and God-realization. Those treasures exist only with them.
