Radha Rani: Her Divine Appearance and Transcendental Form
(Discourse delivered by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj on the occasion of Radhashtami)

Radhashtami is a celebration of the Divine Appearance of Shri Radha Rani, the embodiment of Divine love and the eternal beloved of Shri Krishna. Yet, how Radha Rani appeared in this world and the nature of Her Divine form are beyond our ordinary material understanding.
Divine Appearance of Radha Rani
Very few people know about the divine history of Shri Radha Rani .
There was a king named Nrig Ikshvaku, whose son was Suchandra. The Divine Pitṛs had three mānasī (divinely manifested) daughters: Ratnamala, Kalavati and Menaka. Ratnamala married Janak Paramhans, and their daughter was Sita Janki. Kalavati married Suchandra, while Menaka married Himalaya, and their daughter was Parvati.
Suchandra and Kalavati performed tapasya for twelve years. They were then blessed with the boon that, in Dwapar, they would become Vrishabhanu and Kirti, and that Brahm Radha Rani would manifest in their home.
Thus, Vrishabhanu, the son of King Surbhanu, and Kalavati, who had manifested through the yajna, became Vrishabhanu and Kirti. Kirti, too, did not take birth from her mother’s womb but manifested through the yajna. And from Kirti, Radha Rani manifested.
This is why Radha is described as Ayonisambhava, one who did not take birth from a mother’s womb. Ved Vyas has written about this.
How did this Ayonisambhava take place?
We have already heard how Shri Krishna was born. Devaki conceived Him in her mind, and from there Yogmaya created such a feeling within the mother that she came to feel, “Yes, a son has come.” Gradually, this feeling increased, accompanied by the same symptoms that a mother experiences when there is truly a child in her womb. The vayu within the mother’s womb increased, and Shri Krishna manifested.
Radha Rani manifested in exactly the same way.
The Divine Body of Radha Rani
God’s body is always God Himself. Sachidanand Brahm has a Sachidanand body. In the case of a Siddha Mahapurush, however, the soul is separate and there is a divine body, a Chidanand body. There are two, the body and the one who possesses the body, the embodied being.
After that, all other bodies are mayic. Yogis have a nirvan body and Devtas have a subtle body. These bodies are also extremely wonderful, but they are mayic. As for the physical bodies made of the five great elements, we can see them ourselves.
Therefore, all the bodies that exist are of two kinds: the mayic body and the divine body and soul. Devtas, human beings, and rakshasas all come within the category of mayic bodies. Then there is the divine body and the divine soul of the Siddha Mahapurush in Golok.
Radha Rani’s body, however, is Radha Rani Herself. There are no two separate entities. It manifests and then disappears.
Her appearance, therefore, cannot be understood through our ordinary material concept of birth and the physical body. Her form is eternal, transcendental, and non-different from Her own divine self.
The Divine Presence of Radha Rani
It was that very Radha Rani who manifested at the place where all of you are sitting. But you do not have faith in this. I am speaking honestly, so please do not mind.
If you truly believed that the very earth upon which you are walking is the earth upon which Radha Rani walked, that Her footsteps fell upon this very earth, that the footsteps of the Gopis fell upon this earth, and that I am walking upon that very earth, then what a great fortune Radha Rani has given me! I have not performed such great punya to deserve this.
If we truly had this faith, we would offer ourselves, every particle of this earth, in complete surrender. But we do not do so. Why?
The earth that you are seeing is made of the five great elements. Within this very earth, there is another earth, the Divine earth upon which Radha Rani walked. It is within this very earth, but only Rasik Saints know it.
You cannot see it because your eyes are mayic, your mind is mayic, and your intellect is mayic. When, through sadhana and devotion to Radha Rani, you purify your antahkaran, (inner self) and then, by Her Grace, you receive the Swaroop Shakti (Divine Potency), that Swaroop Shakti will make your antahkaran divine. It will also make your senses divine.
Then you will see that within this very mayic earth, which is made of the five great elements, there is also that Divine earth upon which Radha Rani continues to walk even today.
This is a matter of the final stage of spiritual realization.
For now, we have to understand only this: we want happiness and bliss, and that bliss can be attained only through Radha Rani’s Grace. In order to receive Radha Rani’s Grace, we have to return to the state of a newborn child.
Just as a newly born baby knows nothing, in the same way, we also know nothing about Radha Rani. This is not even a subject that can be spoken about, because it belongs to the transcendental world. Words cannot reach there.
Therefore, when we consider ourselves like an innocent child and cry out to Radha Rani without any desire, and without attaching our mind anywhere else except to Radha Rani and Her associates; not attaching our mind anywhere else – in other words, practising ananya bhakti and nishkam bhakti and purifying our antahkaran – this is our work.”
Then, by the grace of the Guru, we will become worthy. After that, we will experience the real Barsana Dham and that transcendental Divine Ras of Radha Rani, the very Ras that we read about in books, for which even Brahma and Shankar left their own abodes and rolled in the dust of Braj.
Becoming Worthy of Radha Rani’s Grace
So, through sadhana, we too have to move forward.
At all times, we have to practise realizing our Guru and Bhagwan as being with us. It is only through practice that the goal will be attained. Neither can Guru simply give it to us, nor can Radha Rani Herself simply give it to us.
We have had the darshan of Radha Rani and Shri Krishna countless times. But because our intellect was mayic and our eyes were mayic, we remained confined to the mayic realm.
Therefore, our work is to make ourselves worthy and eligible, and we should make this effort.
People who were far worse than us, great sinners, have become Mahapurushas. They were just like us. So we should never become discouraged. Even if there are countless sins, by the Grace of Bhagwan, all can be forgiven.
Our sharanagati, our surrender, must be genuine and complete.
With these words, let us all make a sincere effort from today to become worthy of Radha Rani’s Grace. Let us take a vow that by the time we celebrate the next Radhashtami, we will have accomplished something.
We will have made a real effort so that we may come closer to Radha Rani.
Boliye, Radha Rani Ki Jai!
