How to Meditate on God: The Practice of Roopdhyan
Bhakti Upliftment Series 3

A simple and powerful way to meditate on God is through roopdhyan – loving meditation on His divine form. God gives us full liberty to visualise Him in any way that appeals to our heart. You may imagine Him as tall or short, dark or fair, young or old, adorned in any beautiful attire or ornaments. The key is to see Him as living, moving, smiling, and present before you. Make Him real in your mind’s eye, lovingly call out to Him, and allow your heart to melt in devotion. This is the very essence of bhakti.
Different devotees practise in different ways. One may sing the glories of God while being fully absorbed in His remembrance. Another may offer Him food with such love that the outer world is forgotten. One may decorate the Deity in a temple, while another may mentally serve and adorn God within the mind. The external forms may differ, but what truly matters is the absorption of the mind.
Shri Krishna reciprocates with the soul exactly according to its love. One may love Him as master, friend, child, or beloved, and He responds in the same way. Among these, loving Him as one’s beloved is considered the highest, as it allows complete freedom and includes all other relationships within it.
Chanting the name of God without humility and without roopdhyan is like a body without life. Mechanical repetition yields no result. God does not consider mere physical actions; He responds to the involvement of the mind. The more humble and sincere the devotion, the closer one comes to Him.
Remind yourself that you are an eternal servant of God, and He is your eternal Master. In your heart, feel the presence of Radha Krishna as if They are personally before you. You may even visualise Their divine abode, Golok, and meditate upon Their loving pastimes, remembering Their infinite compassion and kindness.
At the same time, one must carefully guard the mind. Avoid finding faults in others, criticism, and negative associations, as these disturb the mind and weaken devotion. Renounce desires for recognition and remain humble. One must also avoid offences toward God, His names, forms, qualities, abodes, and saints.
There is no single rigid method in bhakti. Any way that helps attach the mind to God is true meditation. Just as iron turns into gold upon contact with a touchstone, the mind becomes divine when it connects with God.
Therefore, practise roopdhyan with love and sincerity, and let this one feeling deepen within your heart: Shri Radha Krishna alone are my eternal refuge, my only beloved, my all-in-all.
