Shri Radha Rani: The Divine Beauty That Enchants Even Krishna by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat

Her Divine Beauty

Who can describe the beauty of Shri Radha Rani? Even the most beautiful words fall short when we try to describe Her.

Shri Vrishabhānunandini is always surrounded by Her beloved sakhis (female companions), performing ever-new divine Leelas in the kunja lanes of Braj. Her very presence is heart-stealing, and Her beauty is such that even Shri Shyāmasundara, who is Himself the source of all beauty, forgets Himself upon seeing Her.

Shri Radha Rani  has a fair, radiant golden complexion and an exquisitely beautiful divine form. She is adorned in a blue sari that is gently fluttering.  A gem-studded golden crown adorns Her head, with a chandrikā shining upon it and strings of pearls hanging from it.  Her long, beautiful plait falls almost to Her ankles, while Her shapely eyebrows, curved like a rainbow, enhance the extraordinary beauty of Her face.

Every part of Her divine form is beautifully adorned. The beauty of the chunarī on Her head, together with Her  besara, (nose-ring) defies all description. Golden earrings grace Her ears, while golden kankanas adorn Her wrists and golden kinkinī encircles Her waist. The redness of henna adorns Her hands, while mihāvar beautifies Her feet. Her golden anklets adorn Her beautiful feet, whose tender redness and infinite softness defy every comparison. Every limb of Her divine form is adorned with beautiful embellishment, yet no description can adequately express Her incomparable beauty.

Her eyes are so intoxicating and filled with divine love,  that they defeat the pride of even those creatures whose eyes are celebrated for their beauty. Her innocent glance completely captivates Shyāmasundara.

Her face is exceedingly innocent, and Her gentle smile is even more innocent and sweet. When She smiles and turns again and again with natural grace, the brilliance of Her teeth flashes like lightning, and Her sweetness irresistibly steals the heart. There is an incomparable sweetness in Her smile that even Shyāmasundara, the Supreme Lord Himself, becomes oblivious of Himself upon seeing it.

Her beauty rains the nectar of Prem, (Divine Love) and no one can remain untouched by it.

Her Greatness: The Embodiment of Divine Love

Consider the greatness of Shri Radha Rani. Kamadeva is known as the one who enchants the world. Shri Krishna is Madan Mohan, the One who enchants even Kamadeva.

Yet Shri Radha Rani enchants even Madan Mohan (The Enchanter of Cupid), Himself. She is therefore the One who captivates the heart of the One who captivates the heart of the entire world.

This is why Shri Shyāmasundara Himself sings Her praises. He who is the crest-jewel of rasikas, the reservoir of all virtues and the One who enchants the entire world, considers Kishori Ji dearer than His own life.

When Shri Krishna sees Her sweet smile, He becomes oblivious of Himself. He longs for Her darshan so deeply that He humbly approaches Her sakhis, Lalitā and the others, pleading with them and even shedding tears while clasping their feet, asking them to help Him meet Kishori Ji. The Supreme Lord, before whom the entire world bows, Himself becomes humble before Shri Radha Rani and Her sakhis.

Even Her māna (affectionate displeasure), Her loving expression of shyness and displeasure, has its own incomparable beauty. When Kishori Ji becomes māninī, even Shyāmasundara is filled with awe. Her sweetness has no limit, and Her love has a depth that cannot be measured.

But the true glory of Shri Radha Rani is not simply Her beauty. It is Her Prem (Divine Love). She is the very embodiment of Divine Love, and Her heart overflows with compassion and mercy, especially for those who are fallen, helpless and downtrodden. She does not look at the faults of the jiva (individual soul); Her nature is simply to shower mercy. This is why She is the compassionate Swāminī who can lift even the most unworthy soul through Her grace.

The most extraordinary proof of Her boundless mercy is that when She hears the pathetic lamentation of a soul seeking Her shelter, She leaves even Her beloved Shyamasundara and rushes to that soul at once. Such is the depth of Shri Radha’s Divine Love and Her compassion for the suffering soul.

Her Prem (Divine Love) is not the ordinary attachment that we experience in worldly relationships. Mental attachment is not Prem. True Prem is the highest Divine Love, beyond selfishness and worldly expectation. It is the innermost and most sacred essence of Hladini Shakti, the power of Divine Love. It cannot be manufactured.

True Prem is so rare that even great paramhansas, absorbed in Brahmananda, may not taste it. Only by the Lord’s Grace can it be attained. Prem unfolds through ever-higher stages: sneh, mān, pranay, rāg, anurāg and finally mahābhāv. Above bhāv is mahābhāv, the highest state of Divine Love, where the gopis had reached, whose foot dust even Brahma longs for.

And mahābhāv too has its stages. There is Madan and Modan. Both are rasas of union, sanjog. In viyog (separation), Modan becomes Mohan. Then even Mohan takes two forms, including udghūrṇā and another form in which there are ten divisions: sañjalpa, vijalpa, avajalpa, ujjalpa, parijalpa, and so forth. And the highest status of Divine Love is called Madan. That very Madan is none other than Shri Radha Rani Herself.

Shri Krishna Himself has not experienced the Madan rasa. He has experienced only the stage just below it. Madan belongs to Radha Rani alone. Radha Rani is not separate from Madan rasa. Her very body is Madan rasa, and Madan rasa is Radha Rani.

Now we can understand why Shri Krishna is so completely enchanted by Her. He is Madan Mohan yet Shri Radha enchants Madan Mohan. This is the greatness of Her Prem. Radha Rani is the Aradhya, the worshipped Deity of Shri Krishna.

Whereas for us human beings, the soul is the master and the body is the servant. The body, along with its senses, mind and intellect, is constantly engaged in serving the soul, always seeking to give it pleasure: “What should I see, hear, smell, taste, touch or obtain so that I may be happy?” Thus, everything within the body is working for the happiness of the soul.

In the same way, the soul is the servant and the Supreme Soul, Shri Krishna, is the Master. And the soul of Shri Krishna is Shri Radha. That is why even Shri Krishna worships Shri Radha Rani.

What Does “Radhe” Mean to Us?

This is something we should stop and think about. We say “Radhe Radhe” again and again, but do we understand whom we are calling?

Imagine you come across a ring lying on the road. Someone asks, “Where did you find that?” You casually reply, “Just on the roadside. Why?” The person then tells you, “This ring is worth a million dollars!” In that moment, your perception changes. What seemed ordinary now feels like a priceless treasure, something to be held with awe, love and great care.

In the same way, when we begin to realise even a glimpse of the divine glory of Shri Radha, the name “Radhe” can no longer feel ordinary. We begin to understand the priceless treasure contained in that name.

God is seated within our hearts and remains all-pervading throughout existence. He watches over us with infinite patience, while we remain absorbed in our petty worries and temporary attachments. We become troubled by one relationship after another, constantly trying to please everyone and caught in the confusion of worldly life.

But these relationships are temporary. The faces and relationships of this world change again and again, while God remains the eternal Father of all souls. We forget our eternal relationship with Him and become attached to what is constantly changing.

So, on this Radhashtami, let us pause and reflect: Who is Shri Radha? Who is Shri Krishna? Who are we? And what is the nature of this world?

Do we truly realise where we are standing? We are standing in Braj, the sacred land where Shri Radha Rani appeared. We are chanting the name of the One whose Prem is the highest state of Divine Love, the One whom Shri Krishna Himself worships as His Aradhya, His beloved and worshipped Deity.

How fortunate we are to have this precious opportunity to be in Braj, chanting the name of Shri Radha Rani and turning our minds towards Her.

Radhashtami, therefore, should not be only a celebration of Shri Radha Rani’s appearance. It should also be a moment to look within. Where is our mind today? What are we attached to? Are we moving towards our eternal relationship with Radha and Krishna, or are we still absorbed in temporary relationships, desires and attachments?

Let us remember the greatness of Shri Radha and the extraordinary love that binds Her to Shri Krishna. She is not merely dear to Him; She is His very soul, His life-breath.

And then, when we utter “Radhe, Radhe,” we will begin to taste the sweetness of Her Name and become intoxicated by its nectar, experiencing the inexplicable, indescribable and infinite bliss inherent in the sweet Name of Shri Radhe. Once the heart has tasted this sweetness, the attractions of the world will begin to fade, drawing us inward towards the discovery of our true self and, ultimately, towards God-realisation.

Boliye Radha Rani Ki Jai!
